How it All Began
To understand how this all evolved, you have to know a little about me.
First of all, I'm an animal lover and long time proponent of caring for the environment. I contribute to
organizations such as
The American Society For The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals,
Defenders of Wildlife,
Sierra Club,
Green Peace,
People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals
and of course the
local Humane Society.
I don’t know anything about showing dogs, agility courses, fly ball or any of the other rages. I just know that when
I come home, I have 3 "smiling faces" and wiggling butts that meet me at the door. No matter how my day has gone,
how can I not feel great when I walk in the door to a greeting like that!
Secondly, I've always been a big advocate of adopting "unwanted" dogs or any other animal. Being a member of the
humane society where I used to live and also here in Waupaca, I know first hand about how many dogs and cats are in
need of homes. I've always tried to encourage others to adopt from a shelter, humane society or rescue group.
Thirdly, I'm a
real estate agent, so with those 3 things in mind,
you can imagine how the wheels started spinning in my head when I read an article in
Animal Sheltering magazine
about
Collette Blanchette, a real estate agent in California whose company is giving vouchers for a free pet to any one who
buys or sells real estate through them. What a great idea!
Collette's story is kind of sad, but this very worthwhile program was started because of it. She lost her 2 dogs and
in the process of looking for them made several trips a day to a shelter. It was then that she noticed so many dogs
and cats with sweet dispositions, confused about their circumstances, peering from cages and hoping to see their
owner or a new family that will love them. She never did find her dogs but adopted a dog and vowed to think of a way
to alleviate the dire problem of some of the thousands of animals each year in her community that face euthanasia,
if not claimed. Thus the beginning of her program.
It only made sense for me to follow in her footsteps and that's how this all began.
